Is it true that a true martial artist should never drink alcohol or go to bars etc?

Absolutely not true.

I drink myself but in moderation.Obviously there are rules like not being intoxicated while in training or teaching that pretty much goes without saying ,but to say never drink alcohol at all is not true at all..many adults drink.many do not,it is a personal choice. There is no contract to sign or anything when you join a martial arts club that says '; i will not drink alcohol';.

Good luck .Is it true that a true martial artist should never drink alcohol or go to bars etc?
It's not true of every martial artist.

A lot of UFC fighters don't drink while training for upcoming fights. Don't get me wrong, there's some that still continue to drink. When you're sticking to a fairly strict diet (to maximize the nutrients you're getting an' such) it seems a little redundant to compromise that by drinking alcohol, smoking, or doing any kind of drugs.

I don't think traditional arts/artists consider there to be anything wrong with drinking either. Though, I expect that there's quite a few that don't drink or drink lightly, as they know that to get drunk would damage their skills and their judgment. I know, first hand, how that can go.

Even if nobody holds you to a higher standard, you should still be trying to raise the bar for yourself. Is it true that a true martial artist should never drink alcohol or go to bars etc?
I've never heard that before. I don't really drink (maybe once a year), but it has nothing to do with being a martial artist. I just don't like the taste of alcohol.

As far as treating the body like a temple goes, well for starters, I think that's a bad analogy. I treat it more like a machine. You've got to keep all the moving parts working well. But as it relates to drinking, there shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't do it to excess. Same thing with everything else.
Honestly this will depend on the person. Many of historical masters people talk about were drinkers and enjoyed their drink...sometimes too much. For example Mas Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin, loved Plum Wine and Sake. He was often known to be rude and mean when he was drunk...as well as loud mouthed. Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, loved a certain type of beer but he never was a drunk.

Many of the great American legends of martial arts such as Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, Jeff Smith and others loved to party and drink...even Bill Wallace...but they were not drunks. There are some great stories these guys tell about hitting bars after tournaments and the situations that arose from them...

My Sensei never drank acohol but he would go out for a good time and that did include bars. I think the important thing is to remember that even the monks were known to drink wine and some of them were drunks as well. Drinking is not an issue if you are legal age and do it in moderation but when it takes over and becomes the drunkeness that idiots have then they are losing their martial arts ability because they have no self control.
drunken monkey style dude!

I think the most hardcore martial artists, typically those who live in oriental countries choose to abstain from alcohol, because they believe they put themselves in those vulnerable, dangerous types of situations. Most other martial artists do it, but do it in moderation, like they don't get hardcore ****** up.
Drunkenness is what you have to watch out for.

1 Timothy 5:23 -

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

Hard liquor is often abused.

Ecclesiastes 10: 19 -

A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
lol, no it's not true, just don't go into the dojo drunk.

they can drink and treat their body like a temple. many religions have some sort of drinking involved directly with them

catholics drink wine in church, if i remember right, there were some buddist temples, where alcohol was drank as a form of offering.

there's nothing that says martial artists can't drink or smoke. i don't, because i don't see the point in either, but it's perfectly fine (and i'm underaged to drink...that would make me a hippocryt)
Drinking and going out to have a good time is different from getting out of control.

A martial artist has no business getting to a point where his judgment is impaired.

Personally, I never drink, but I see no moral problem with alcohol per se.
Absolutely not. Martial arts isn't about that. However, such 'discipline' and beliefs are very central to many PHILOSOPHIES that are closely linked with several martial arts, particularly Eastern ones. Some believe them to be inseparable, but they can be separate.
Jim has it right. It's about self-control, not about alcohol or bars.

Jesus said his body was a temple too, and he not only drank wine, he made it, and later made drinking it a sacrament.
Hell no! Bars are where all the fights are! How else are you going to test your skills?

Seriously though, occasional drinking in moderation is not unhealthy. Bar food is actually worse for you!
Where do u come up with that crap? They are human like everyone else. Everything should be taken in moderation. I drank with my sifu all the time.
Chuck Liddell would disagree. So would Tank Abbott.
That's good advice for everybody.
