What's the difference between ';inspired by a true story'; and ';based on a true story';?

Both of these descriptions are dramatizations of true stories. Although there are no hard-and-fast rules, ';inspired'; can mean that the names and some of the facts have been changed for dramatic license; ';based upon'; a true story, can mean that at least some of the names and facts may be true, and others may be creative fiction. It is quite common to combine several persons into one character, in order to focus on a single person or historical fact rather than many different. What's the difference between ';inspired by a true story'; and ';based on a true story';?
No one can say that something wasn't ';inspired by'; something else, it is not something that anyone can prove wrong. Inspiration is a personal term. However, to claim that something is ';based'; on something is something that can be challenged and compared.

What's the difference between ';inspired by a true story'; and ';based on a true story';?
When an author is 'inspire' by events he uses those events

to create a fictional story. The courage of a hero in real life will

be reinvented in a fictional story. Based on a true story really

happened to someone but the names were changed to protect

the identity of the people involved.
Both allow some literary leeway with the truth but generally ';inspired'; is more fictionalised.

';based'; normally tends to follow the truth more.

I hope that helps. Different people will have differ ant perceptions
A lot of artistic leeway!

Based on means you are including documentable elements from the true story in your re-telling.

Inspired by means you're basically just using the situation of the true story as a jumping off point for your own story.
';inspired by a true story'; is when an event happens which inspires the playmaker to write a story in which the same type of event happens, while ';based on a true story'; is when an event happens and the playmaker wants to write a story that is relativel the same thing

hope that helped!!
Both buzz phrases to get people to believe the story is somehow fact.

I always use the term ';Loosely based on a true story';.

Inspired by a true story can mean anything. It could be inspired to write something totally different.
they're pretty much the same thing, they're both partially fictional. i think inspired by a true story means that it could be a similar situation but it is completely fictional. based on a true story means that some of the things actually did happen.
inspired by a true story is they can fictionalized the facts but when it based on a true story they have to go by the facts of the story
I think inspired by a true story is all fictional, but still revolves around what really happened and for based on a true story, there are parts that actually happened. They are pretty similar, good question.
