They used to have more in common. A liberal used to be one who for in favor of maximizing individual rights and minimizing government control.
A true conservative is for limited government, low taxes for all, a strong national defense, a separation of powers as the founding fathers intended, and free enterprise (capitalism with some restraints, but as much freedom as possible). Essentially, government should be to protect individual freedoms.

When you get down to it I'd bet there isn't that much difference between the two. Anyway, I'm a democrat which makes me a liberal I suppose anyway by today's jargon I'm a liberal. However, I don't believe in hand outs and neither do I believe in un equal rights. I don't believe that anyone should be treated any differently than another and thus we'd all be treated equal. I am referring to the equal rights amendment of course where advantages are presented as atonement for past mistakes and wrongs.
On the other hand people need a helping hand for instance where people are in a poor section of a city and can't get a job and there's no public transportation I believe provisions for transportation should be provided. The same with education of people who for some reason have not been able to take advantage of our dubious education system and have to go to jr college and I believe they should get assistance.
But, that's for everyone not just a particular race or cultural segment of our society.
I believe that providing opportunities for everyone should be the norm.
I believe that it's a woman's right to abort a child particularly when there's danger or health problems. I believe that a woman should have a choice.
I believe that democrats provide the best leaders.

conservatives believe in the equal treatment for ALL,regardless of faith,race,creed,or sex,and they believe in debate when finding solutions liberals believe some need special treatment and if you dont agree with their beliefs you will be attacked and degraded and they do not believe in debate because they can not defend their beliefs in a civil manner, just look at the congress No debate over policy no bipartisan policies, and if you disagree with the democrat policies you are attacked. as for equality for all , well you only need to look at the equal oppourtunity policies of democrat who continually pass legislation to keep whole classes of people poor and uneducated. conservatives want school voucher programs so all children have the oppourtunity to attend quality schools,liberals do not because the teachers union is against it. conservatives want everyone employed and earning a quality living so you can make your own lifes decisions, liberals want to keep you on the government welfare program so they can keep your vote
Generally speaking, conservatives believe that everybody has an equal chance of being successful no matter how advantaged/disadvantaged they are at the beginning of their life, while liberals think that more things contribute to ones personal success than that.
